2020 BMW X5 Sunroof

No matter what you call them, sunroofs and moonroofs are great for opening up the space in your new BMW cabin. Do you need to know the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof? It helps to understand the finer points of both so you know what to expect from your next vehicle in Darlington and Sumter. What’s the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof? BMW of Florence explains the differences.

What’s the Difference Between a Sunroof and a Moonroof?

The difference between a sunroof and a moonroof, in simple terms:

  • Sunroofs are opaque panels made of metal or even canvas, that are installed in the roof of a car, truck, or SUV. They pop up, can be removed, or slide open to allow light and air into the cabin.
  • Moonroofs are usually a clear or tinted glass panel that slides between the roof and the headliner and can sometimes also be tilted open to let in fresh air. Moonroofs are sometimes but only sometimes, larger than sunroofs.

What is a Moonroof?

Sunroof tends to be an umbrella term for any glass roof panels on a vehicle. A moonroof is a category of sunroofs that are exclusively made of glass and can’t be removed from your BMW. Most moonroofs can slide or tilt open to get some fresh air on those beautiful Marion spring days. When not in use, moonroofs can usually be covered with a sliding panel that matches the car’s ceiling liner. These days, moonroofs are far more common than sunroofs, with many drivers preferring their ease of and often larger size.

What Are Panoramic Roof Systems?

Now that you know what’s the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof, let’s discuss panoramic roof systems which are among the most popular types of sunroofs and moonroofs. Panoramic roofs come with multiple panels in the roof that are either operable or fixed. This allows front and rear passengers to open a panel for fresh air and sunlight — just the thing for enjoying a joyride!
